James has over 20 years international business experience in developing and commercializing products in biotechnology, environmental technology and construction. He graduated with doctoral degrees and a M.Sc. from Stanford University’s Schools of Civil Engineering and Medicine, receiving AWWA’s Best US Doctoral Dissertation Award in 1984. He then worked as a postdoctoral scientist at NTNU from 1985-1987 as a World Bank McNamara Fellow, thereafter starting as partner with Aquateam AS where he stayed from 1987-1997 doing applied research and consulting, while serving as Adjunct Associate Professor at Stanford University School of Civil Engineering. James founded Colifast AS in 1997 and remained as technology and later business development director until 2004. He has led R&D projects, as PI or Coordinator, funded by EU, NATO, NASA, the U.S.EPA, and Norwegian Research Council producing over 80 publications and 14 patents. From 2004 until 2009 he initiated the first corporate Intellectual Property Manament (IPM) position for Selvaag Gruppen, working as Director of Intellectual Property for the concern and its 10 daughter companies. He worked at Zacco Norway’s office from 2009-2010 as Sr. IP Consultant developing new products to assist clients in the evaluation, protection and commercialization of early stage innovations; and was on secondment to Statoil in their Technology Capture and IPM Division. James joined NIVA in January 2011 as Director of Technology and Innovation.
