The Norwegian environmental monitoring program ØKOKYST (Ecosystem Monitoring of Coastal Waters) financed by Norwegian Environment Agency is divided into several subprograms with the aim to monitor the environmental state along the Norwegian coast in accordance to the Water Frame Directive.

NIVA is involved in ØKOKYST and uses the Ferrybox-system installed at the coastal ship “Trollfjord” sailing from Bergen to Kirkenes and MS Color Fantasy in the Skagerrak for measurements of physical parameters and water-sampling. Analysis of phytoplankton abundance and composition, and measurements of chlorophyll a for ecological classification of the water masses by use of the biological quality element Phytoplankton, are some of NIVAs responsibilities in this program.
