Deep sea instrumentation
Climate change, requiring development and deployment of carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology, is one of the most important challenges in this century. Through the FME-SUCCESS program, deep sea instrumentation like Bentic Chamber Lander, time-lapse camera, microprofiler and deep sea pCO2 and CH4 sensors are available for deep sea research.
NIVA's deep sea infrastructure can carry out on-site experiments on response of organisms and benthic ecosystems to CO2 (and CH4) exposure. NIVA offers tools for developing bio-indicators and cost-effective means for long-term monitoring of CO2 seepage over large sub-marine regions, and a tool for collecting necessary information for baseline environmental assessment of candidate sub-seabed storage sites.

The SUCCESS centre addresses several important areas for CO2 storage in the subsurface: storage performance, sealing properties, injection, monitoring and consequences for the marine environment. NIVA participate in the monitoring with sensors development, effect-studies and modeling.
