Aquaculture
Good water quality is vital for the farming of fish and other marine organisms. NIVA works to promote sustainable aquaculture through close cooperation with the aquaculture industry, public administration agencies and other research environments nationally and internationally.
The parts of our coastal zones that are utilised for aquaculture must be used in ways to that ensure fish welfare and minimise negative impacts on the environment.
NIVA works with research, development, consulting and documentation related to smolt production and ongrowing facilities.
NIVA activities include:
1. Fish production and fish welfare
- Modelling the risks of disease spreading between different fish farm facilities
- Warnings about blooms of toxic algae
- Warnings about unfavourable water quality, for example toxic aluminium in fjords with significant inflows of freshwater
- Transport of living fish
- Assistance in cases of acute fish mortality
2. Environmental impact
- Measuring nutrient pollution, and providing advice on necessary countermeasures
- Surveying the ecological effects of aquaculture
- Studies of the interaction between farmed fish and wild fish (Gyrodactylus salaris, salmon louse, escapes)
3. Research and development
- Developing new disinfection and water treatment methods
- Recirculation of water in closed systems
- Research on environmental and ecological impacts
- Farming new marine species
- Use of waste from fish farms as plant nutrients or in energy production (Aquaponics)
4. Knowledge dissemination
- Consulting services
- Courses and seminars, for instance in fish welfare
- Preparing documentation required by administrative agencies
NIVA Chile
NIVA Chile is a subsidiary of NIVA that works with aquaculture and environmental projects in Chile, South America. The organisation cooperates closely with NIVA's section for aquaculture.
