Bergen - Kirkenes: MS Trollfjord

The Norwegian Coastal Voyage (or Hurtigruten) fleet has been used to measure the temperature and salinity of the sea along the Norwegian coast for a number of years. The Ferrybox system is currently installed on the MS Trollfjord and has monitored the water quality along the ship's route since 2004.

The majority of Norwegian fish farm facilities are located along the coastal stretch from Bergen to Kirkenes. Therefore, the Ferrybox system has an important role in alerting about changes in the water environment, such as temperature fluctuations, freshwater inflow and toxic algae blooms.

Information from the Ferrybox system is used in the implementation of the EU Water Framework Directive to ensure the quality of satellite data and in an ocean acidification project.
