NIVA and REV Ocean links up to coordinate ocean actions
REV Ocean and the Norwegian Institute for Water Research (NIVA) coordinate actions against plastic pollution, action for blue forests, and collection of ocean data through marine drones and FerryBox ships of opportunity.
The environmental effects of offshore produced water discharges
A new overview article on produced water describes Norwegian environmental research in the area over the past 30 years. The article looks at, among other things, whether fish and other animals are harmed by produced water discharges, and whether the ecosystems in the Barents Sea may be extra vulnerable to discharges.
New NIVA studies on environmental effects of a green bioeconomy
The green shift implies that society will rely more on renewable biomass resources for the provision of food, fodder, fibre and fuel. Such a transition will have benefits but also trade-offs. In a special issue from the Nordic Centre of Excellence Biowater, NIVA has contributed with studies on the role of forests and forestry in the context of the green shift.
The "plastic rivers" of Asia play a key part in the fight against plastic in the ocean
OPINION: Near half of the global plastic leakage from land to sea comes from a few countries in Southeast Asia. To overcome the plastic problem, we need to treat the cause and not just the symptoms. We must turn the spotlight on the sources.
Change of leadership in NIVA
Greta Bentzen resigns as head of NIVA at the end of the year. Deputy Managing Director Tor-Petter Johnsen will take over as acting Managing Director from 1 January.
Ocean Acidification and Human Health
While ocean acidification was initially perceived as a threat only to the marine realm, the authors of a new publication argue that it is also an emerging human health issue.
FISHTREAT™: A novel, sustainable medicinal dosing system for fish farms
Researchers at the Norwegian Institute for Water Research (NIVA) have developed a new dosing system for continual treatment of salmon lice directly in cages. The overall impact to the environment is expected to be minimal and the fish are relieved of the stress associated with handling during treatments.
Europe’s seas face uncertain future if urgent, coherent action not taken
Faced with the increased threats posed by overexploitation of marine resources, pollution and climate change, urgent action is needed to bring Europe’s seas back to good condition. According to the European Environment Agency’s report on Europe’s marine ecosystems, published today, we are running out of time to reverse decades of neglect and misuse.
New Protocol for the Verification of Ballast Water Compliance Monitoring Devices
A variety of ballast water compliance monitoring devices have been developed and several novel approaches are currently being explored. However, rigorous, transparent and standardized verification testing is needed for these devices to be adopted and implemented globally, by multiple administrations to enforce compliance monitoring. To address this need, a new protocol has been developed to serve as a standardized framework for the verification testing of CMDs. The protocol has been peer-reviewed by NIVA.
Need for better approaches to tackle multiple stressors in European lakes and rivers
A newly released Nature paper with several NIVA co-authors highlights a continued management need for reduction of nutrient stress in lakes. It also shows that river management requires more complicated approaches to tackle several stressors simultaneously.
Wastewater treatment boom changes essential nutrient balance in lakes
A vast number of new wastewater treatment plants in developing countries has led to an imbalance between phosphorous and nitrogen in surface waters. The result could be excessive growth of potentially poisonous algae with a preference for nitrogen. A new study calls for better nutrient reduction in order to maintain ecosystem biodiversity.
New study calls for joint effort to address ocean acidification problem
A new study shows that ocean acidification is a global problem with profoundly negative environmental, social and economic consequences. Researchers call for a coordinated effort to address the problem – and points to Norway as a good example on how to combat ocean acidification.
Kick-off meeting for SINOPLAST project
The Sino Norwegian Cooperation Project to Reduce Plastic and Microplastic Pollution (SINOPLAST) was officially kicked off May 20th in the form of an online conference.
Norwegian-Portuguese collaboration in technological development of drone-based coastal observations
A bilateral initiative on exchange of experience and knowledge of remote sensing techniques for the mapping of coastal biological communities through unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) has recently been funded through the EEA-grants. The partners are The Norwegian Institute for Water Research (NIVA) and Interdisciplinary Centre of Marine and Environmental Research (CIIMAR), University of Porto.
New offices for NIVA Chile
NIVA Chile has had a very good development the last years, with five full time employees and a result of 0,9 mill. NOK in 2019. They outgrew their current offices, and after a thorough search, ended up purchasing a field 10-15 minutes outside of Puerto Varas last year. After six months of construction, the new offices are now finished.
Microplastics found in 4 of 5 bivalve species investigated in Nordic waters
A new research project has looked at microplastics in marine bivalves from 100 sites spread throughout much of the Nordic waters. Microplastics were found in 4 of the 5 bivalve species investigated, and there was a huge variation in the occurrence and type of microplastics.
Can the sewers disclose the scale of COVID-19?
In an application to the Research Council of Norway’s emergency call for proposals in the fight against the Coronavirus, scientists from NMBU, NIVA, Karolinska Institutet and The Veterinary Institute wants to analyze samples from the sewer in the hunt for COVID-19.
NIVA's offices and COVID-19
NIVA's activities are carried out in line with infection control recommendations. After Norway lifted most restrictions on September 25th, we welcome colleagues and guests back to the office.
Bottled water is not only for drinking
In today’s world, where pollution and contamination frequently have a negative impact on our natural resources, it is vital to maintain regular and regulated testing of chemicals, toxins, or other forms of contamination. However, in order to do this properly, we need the correct tools and methods so that we can recognize when conditions aren’t ideal.
NIVA participates in newly funded H2020 project FUTUREmares
NIVA is a leading research partner in the newly funded H2020 project, FUTUREmares, that will provide socially and economically viable nature-based solutions for climate change adaptation and mitigation to safeguard these ecosystems’ natural capital, biodiversity and services.
