Profile

Maria Christou is a toxicologist with a BsC degree in Biology and a MsC degree in Environmnetal Sciences. During her PhD studies at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU) she investigated the effects of persistent organic pollutants on the embryo, larval and adult stage of zebrafish. Since 2021 she is Post Doc in the Ecotoxicology and Risk Assessment section at NIVA in Oslo and mainly works within the RCN-funded project RiskAOP in which she focuses on developing next generation approaches for cost-efficient chemical safety evaluation of mitochondrial toxicity and reduced laboratory animal tests. She has experience with multiple methods including omics, behavior, fluorescence microscopy and different types of bioassays as well as different aquatic species (zebrafish, daphnia, tisbe). She has received training and is qualified to perform GLP tests.
Her scientific interests lie in multiomics approaches and developing animal anternative methods to evaluate the effects of pollutants in organisms.
