Merete Schøyen works as a Senior Research Scientist and marine biologist at Section for Environmental contaminants at Norwegian Institute for Water Research (NIVA) in Oslo. She has more than 20 years of experience in marine research, monitoring and consulting. The main expertise is environmental monitoring of levels, trends and effects in organisms and sediments in fjords and coastal waters. The special expertise is imposex in marine snails. She has good experience in basic monitoring and operational monitoring. Classification and assessment of ecologic and chemical conditions in accordance to the European Water Frame Directive are key elements. Her field of research includes environmental problems, chemistry and ecotoxicology. Schøyen mainly works with data management, reporting and presentation of large data series and long-term trends. She organizes fieldwork for marine research (biota, sediments and soft bottom fauna) and has extensive lab experience. She is project manager for several large national (e.g. MILKYS) and international projects for the government and industry. She has 12 years of HSE-experience as a personnel safety representative (2005-2008) and head safety delegate (employees’ representatives) (2009-2016) through extensive restructuring processes at NIVA. She was an employee-elected board member of the NIVA foundation (Oslo, Grimstad, Bergen, Hamar, Solbergstrand, København) in two periods (2014-2015 and 2016-2017). She is a participant of the national group for monitoring of marine ecosystems (Overvåkingsgruppen). She has authored a number of scientific publications and reports.
