Profile

Bernhard Askedalen is dedicated to the conservation and restoration of habitats that support endangered species of freshwater plants and algae. In his work at NIVA, he takes part in monitoring the status of aquatic plants and attached algae in Norwegian water bodies. He contributes to NIVA’s work on the implementation of the Eco-Syst system as tool for value-neutral conservation of important habitats in Norway. He has also been appointed as one of the experts on the algae committee for the 2027 Norwegian Red List of Species.

Bernhard recently graduated from the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU) with a master’s degree in ecology. Prior to that, he earned a trade certificate as a gardener, where he got an interest in the often-blurred line between “nature” and “culture.”

Bernhard is the chair of the Oslo and Akershus Botanical Association. Since 2017, he has had the opportunity to gain species identification skills in aquatic plants, charophytes, and mosses through this society.
