The eLTER RI is a network of European environmental monitoring and research stations that was included on the ESFRI Roadmap 2018 and that intends to evolve into a European Research Infrastructure Consortium (ERIC) by 2026.

eLTER RI fills a gap in the environmental RI landscape, striving for a mechanistic understanding of the impacts of multiple stressors on natural resources, ecosystems, and biodiversity. eLTER´s Whole System Approach is unique in combining comprehensive long-term ecosystem observation and cross-disciplinary analyses to improve our knowledge of the structure and functions of major European ecosystems. The eLTER RI encompasses the coordinating Head Office, a service portal serving as an access point for sites, data discovery and repository, and topic centres covering thematic service areas such as quality assurance, modelling and analysis tools, and design and interoperability.

LTER Norway is among the 27 national consortia that collectively form the basis for eLTER. The Norwegian consortium is coordinated by NIVA (Norwegian Institute for Water Research) and includes seven partner institutions: NILU (Norwegian Institute for Air Research), NINA (Norwegian Institute for Nature Research), NIBIO (Norwegian Institute of Bioeconomy Research), UiO-NHM (University of Oslo - Natural History Museum), NTNU-VM (Norwegian University of Science and Technology – University Museum), UiT (University of Tromsø - The Arctic University of Norway), and NPI (Norwegian Polar Institute).

The Norwegian LTER network facilitates extensive institutional cooperation and division of labour at the national level. On behalf of LTER Norway, NIVA is partner in the eLTER PPP (Preparatory Phase Project), a five-year project (2020-2024) under Horizon 2020, aimed at formalizing eLTER as a fully established infrastructure (ERIC).
