Summary

NIVA has carried out a critical review and environmental expert assessment of the magnitudes, causes and possible environmental impacts of releases of hexavalent chromium from Landfill 2.1 of Glencore Manganese Norway AS ' at Mo Industrial Park (MIP). Annual emissions of chromium from Landfill 2.1 seem to have increased significantly after 2009. In the period 2010-2014 the roughly estimated emissions were 3.2-28.2 kg/year or ca. 80 kg for the whole period. Due to the high pH in the leachate the main fraction of the chromium was most likely Cr (VI), a chromium form that is far more mobile and toxic than Cr (III).
