Summary

NIVA has conducted operational monitoring in the Ranfjord on behalf of Mo Industripark AS, Celsa Armeringsstål AS, Elkem Rana AS, Glencore Manganese Norway AS, Rana Gruber AS and Miljøteknikk Terrateam AS. The monitoring programme was prepared in accordance with the water frame directive and approved by the Norwegian Environmental Agency. The programme is designed based on the companies discharges of contaminants to the sea. Levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and heavy metals were analysed in samples of blue mussels. Since no concentrations exceeded the environmental standard of the priority substances, the three stations in the programme are in «good chemical status». Blue mussels from Moholmen and Toraneskaia had elevated concentrations of chrome, nickel, lead and zinc.
