Summary

NIVA has conducted operational monitoring of the Husnesfjord on behalf of Hydro Aluminium Husnes. The monitoring programme was prepared in accordance with the Water Frame Directive and approved by the Norwegian Environmental Agency. The programme was designed based on the company’s discharges of contaminants to the Husnesfjord. Levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), and metals were analysed in caged blue mussels on five stations. The limit value (EQS) was exceeded for the priority substance mercury on station BL6. The chemical status of that station is therefore classified as "not good". However, the exceedance of the EQS on that station was very little. That blue mussel station was in the local marina, and the concentration of mercury detected there may have been caused by pollution from the marina. There were no exceedances of limit values for the four other stations, and the stations are therefore classified as having "good" chemical status. There were no exceedances of limit values for any of the PAH substances. Only low concentrations of fluoride were detected in the blue mussels.
