Summary

The monitoring in 2014 has comprised three rounds of water sampling for determination of water chemical variables and heavy metals in surface water run-off from the 12 shooting ranges: Marka, Bømoen, Nedrebøheia, Tittelsnes, Nesje, Ørskogfjellet, Gurulia/Bue-Nebb, Banemyra, Steinkjersannan, Melbu/Haugtuva, Fredrikstad, and Avgrunnsdalen. The run-off from the former two was also analysed for residuals of components in explosives. In addition, COWI has monitored the run-off from Gimlemoen. The shooting ranges Nedrebøheia and Bømoen have been cleaned up and concentrations of heavy metals were low. Explosive residuals were not detected and monitoring is no longer required. Heavy metal concentrations were also low at Marka and Melbu/Haugtuva, and they will likely continue to be low until works starts in the shooting ranges. Further monitoring can be postponed until cleanup operations starts. Concentrations of lead and copper were relatively high in run-off from Banemyra and Ørskogfjellet. Tittelsnes, Nesje, Gurulia/Bue-Nebb, Steinkjersannan, Avgrunnsdalen and Fredrikstad were cleaned up recently, but it is only in the former that it appears to have had effect on the metal concentration in run off. In these shooting ranges monitoring should continue in order to follow the development on a longer time scale. Lead is the most important pollutant leaking out of the disused shooting ranges. The highest run-off of lead was found at Gurulia/Bue-Nebb, Avgrunnsdalen and Ørskogfjellet, and total concentrations were higher than environmental quality standard of 7.2 µg/L dissolved lead.
