Summary

NIVA has carried out operational monitoring in Karmsundet in 2015, outside the company site for Hydro Aluminium Karmøy AS. The monitoring program was in accordance to the water framework directive and was approved by the Norwegian Environmental Agency. The program was based on the composition of the companies’ discharges to the water body. The company has discharge consents for As, Cr, Ni, Pb, Cd and suspended matter. The monitoring program included sampling of blue mussels at nine stations, and sediment samples from seven stations. The contamination of metals and PAH-compounds were determined. Mussels were sampled in September, and sediment samples were collected in June. Both mussels and sediments from the same stations have been included in an earlier sampling program in 2008, and the results included in this report have been compared with these data.
