Summary

The Norwegian Environment Agency has established a working group to investigate the possibility of treating the rivers in the Drammen region to eradicate the salmon parasite Gyrodactylus salaris. The working group has identified various scientific questions needing clarification for the group to respond to the mandate, and the group thus proposed research to clarify the questions. The working group has identified a need for mapping the water chemistry of catchments considered for treatment, including the catchments draining to the fjords outside the rivers. Such an investigation should reveal deviations in water chemistry e.g. mineral rich ground water, and the data will provide the basis for calculating the consumption of chemicals. The project included taking water samples for analysis, as well as providing and processing of historic data from existing databases. The review of existing databases showed that there was abundant water chemistry data for the area, but with varying relevance to the project. Hence, a water sampling was conducted to collect the necessary data for later calculations of the consumption of chemicals during treatments.
