BlueActionBANOS (BAB)

BlueActionBANOS (BAB) is a Horizon Europe-funded research and innovation project that places local communities at the heart of restoring our ocean and waters.

The overall objective of the project is to contribute to the conservation of biodiversity, the reduction of pollution and the transition to a climate-neutral blue economy in line with EU’s "Restore Our Ocean and Waters by 2030" and the European Green Deal.

The project marks a new phase in the EU's Horizon Europe program, where Blue Action funding will shift the focus from research and pilot projects to the scaling up of solutions through community-led initiatives. 

Through Community-led Action Grants and Transition Agenda Grants, BlueActionBANOS will fund community-based projects and initiatives that can implement innovative solutions that

• Reduce pollution
• Restore aquatic ecosystems
• Accelerate the transition to a circular and carbon-neutral blue economy

Community-led projects can apply for NOK 2.2 and 22 million, and for developing Transition Agendas, up to NOK 1.1 million.

To strengthen the scope and impact of funded projects, all funded projects and initiatives will be offered tailored expert guidance, technical guidance, and strategic knowledge-sharing, equipping communities with the tools and resources they need to address complex environmental challenges and drive sustainable transformation at local, regional, and national levels.

From Norway, the Norwegian Institute for Water Research (NIVA) play an important role in acting as a national contact point for BAB-funded projects in Norway, as well as ensuring synergies between Blue Action BANOS and NIVA's sister projects in the Baltic Sea region and the northern areas: FutureLakes, NID4Ocean, Blue4All, Blue Connect, BlueMissionAA og BlueActionAA.

BlueActionBANOS has 18 partners from Germany, Belgium, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands and Poland, and is coordinated by SUBMARINER Network for Blue Growth.
