State of the Cryosphere 2021 Report

Some may have never heard of the term Cryosphere, though most know where the Earth is covered by ice and snow either seasonally or year-round. Climate change is happening in the Cryosphere faster and more dramatically than anywhere else on earth. The first State of the Cryosphere report, reviewed and supported by nearly 50 leading cryosphere scientists and with over half of them Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) authors, has been released and will come out annually every year until 2030.

Lower levels of contaminants along the Norwegian coast – but still high concentrations of mercury in cod in some urban areas

The contaminant concentrations in the marine environment are decreasing along the Norwegian coastline – but there are some exceptions. In many urban areas, long-term trends for mercury in cod fillet are upwards. In the Inner Oslofjord, mercury levels in cod fillet have increased over the past 35 years, but leveled out during the past 10 years.

Europe’s seas face uncertain future if urgent, coherent action not taken

Faced with the increased threats posed by overexploitation of marine resources, pollution and climate change, urgent action is needed to bring Europe’s seas back to good condition. According to the European Environment Agency’s report on Europe’s marine ecosystems, published today, we are running out of time to reverse decades of neglect and misuse.

Microplastics found in 4 of 5 bivalve species investigated in Nordic waters

A new research project has looked at microplastics in marine bivalves from 100 sites spread throughout much of the Nordic waters. Microplastics were found in 4 of the 5 bivalve species investigated, and there was a huge variation in the occurrence and type of microplastics.

NIVA at COP25: Where Urgency and Ambition Meet

NIVA has made a strong presence at The UN Climate Change Conference COP 25 (2 – 13 December 2019). Senior Research Scientist Richard Bellerby has taken part in and hosted events on ocean acidification (Arctic Council and The Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Programme) as well as contributed to the ICCI-report "Cryosphere 1,5 degrees", launched during the conference.

Eutrophication remains a major problem for Europe’s seas despite some progress

The shared vision for Europe’s seas is a healthy marine environment where human-induced eutrophication is minimised. However, the European Environment Agency’s (EEA) assessment, published December 11th shows that eutrophication still remains a large scale problem in Europe’s regional seas. The assessment shows some positive effects from better nutrient management but the overall target of healthy seas will not be met by 2020.
