About the project

The aim of the project is to develop new, sustainable and climate-positive products from seaweed that will boost the industry and set the course for Norway to become an international leader in seaweed farming. The main focus will be on products in four market areas: food ingredients, animal feed, biodegradable plastic substitutes and fertilizer/biocharcoal. The project is lead by SINTEF.

NIVA leads the task “Climate and environmental interactions” and will evaluate effects of industrial kelp cultivation on marine ecosystems and assess interactions between cultivated and natural seaweeds. This work includes:

  • an assessment of biodiversity, alien and threatened species associated with kelp farms
  • disease in seaweeds: how pathogens may interact with the environment and effects on production
  • reduced GHG emissions: quantify carbon removal through the natural processes in the ocean
  • quantifying CO2-emissions related to the production and processing steps
  • mathematical modelling: net C budget for the entire value chain
