Ailbhe Macken is a researcher at NIVA in the section for Ecotoxicology and Risk Assessment. Dr Macken has over 10 years of experience working in the area of ecotoxicology with particular emphasis on the areas of marine biological effects monitoring and the application of effects directed analysis and toxicity identification evaluation, development and use of in vivo and in vitro bioassays, nano and regulatory ecotoxicology (GLP) and risk assessment. Dr. Macken has experience in all aspects of invertebrate and aquatic regulatory ecotoxicity testing including hazard assessment of environmental mixtures and single substances for product registration. She has experience in the ecotoxicological testing of “difficult” substances (e.g. sparingly soluble, volatile, and unstable) and has a sound working knowledge of the regulatory legislation (e.g. REACH, GHS and EMEA) and in marine and environmental directives and legislation (e.g. WFD, EU Marine Strategy Directive). Dr. Macken is the Norwegian representative on the Management Committee for the COST Action “The transfer of engineered nanomaterials from wastewater treatment and stormwater to rivers”, the co-lead for Ecotoxicology in the Norman Working group on the Fate and Impact of ENMs in the aquatic environment (sludge, soil, sediment, leachates), and a member of the EC expert advisory group on endocrine disruptors. Dr Macken is actively involved in several EU and national funded projects e.g. EU funded NanoREG platform on the safety of nanomaterials, CERAD and is at present also involved in the supervision of international PhD students. In addition, Dr. Macken is widely published in the field of marine science and ecotoxicology and has been an invited speaker at many International conferences. She is also a member of several professional organisations and has acted as a reviewer on numerous occasions for international peer review publications.
