Syntheses

Syntheses can be used as a basis for water management and for companies that want to optimize operations and reduce their environmental footprint.

Syntheses is an activity in which different forms of knowledge are put together into a whole that in the process becomes new knowledge. Their purpose is primarily scientific. The researchers are driven by curiosity and analyse large amounts of data to create new knowledge.

A good example of NIVA's work with syntheses is the Aquatic Synthesis Research Centre – AquaSYNC. AquaSYNC aims to create state-of-the art syntheses in aquatic ecosystems, based on large datasets and conducted by working groups − Synthesis Working Groups (SWGs). The end products are scientific articles. All AqusSYNC's activities focus on solutions and improvement of the water environment.

In addition to syntheses based on large amounts of data, AquaSYNC also develops so-called Multi-metric Indicator-based Assessment Tools (MIBATs). These are used by the working groups or in connection with the preparation of Integrated Assessments (IAs).

AquaSYNC is based at NIVA Denmark in Copenhagen and is a collaboration between NIVA, Aarhus University in Denmark and the Marine Environment Institute in Sweden.
