Pollution is one of the major environmental challenges of our time – on a par with climate change and the loss of nature. Chemical substances and particles affect the environment, health and society through complex interactions between emissions, dispersion and exposure.

Challenges relating to, amongst other things, PFAS, microplastics and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) highlight the need for a solid knowledge base and comprehensive assessments in order to make sound decisions.

NIVA’s Contaminants and Environmental Technology Section contributes research, analyses and assessments that support public authorities, industry and society in their efforts to understand, prevent and manage pollution. Our work ranges from understanding problems and monitoring to evaluating measures and solutions.

What we can offer

The section covers a wide range of issues relating to pollution in the environment and society. Our work generates knowledge that is used in regulation, planning, risk assessment and the development of solutions.

How we work

The work carried out in the section combines research, methodology development and commissioned analyses. We take a holistic approach to pollution – from understanding sources and dispersion in the environment, through advanced chemical analyses and data interpretation, to the assessment of measures and solutions.

Collaboration with public authorities, industry and other research communities is a key part of our work.
